1.  Independent Reading --   Please read quietly for about 10 minutes

2.   New York Times article on the use of language -- We examined Herbert's use of language in "Jim Crow Policing"  showing how it worked to manipulate emotion (pathos).  Journalists make very deliberate and conscious choices about the terms that they use because they are aware of the influences of language.  We are going to read an article that is significant in pointing this out.  To note main ideas in this article, write 5 questions for each page  Include the answer.  Write the question in the left margin and the answer in the right margin.
