"A Change of Heart"

Good Morning!
I hope that you had a great weekend!

1.  Independent Reading --Begin at the bell.

NOTE:  I am working on the Personal Essays.  I will not give your essay any grade if it needs to be revised or is incomplete.

2."A Change of Heart"  --We gave this text a second reading yesterday to examine not only what is said but also the rhetorical function of the paragraph.  Is new information being explained?  Is the writer making an argument?  Is the argument being supported with evidence and examples?

WRITERS JOURNAL ASSIGNMENT -- Refer to Activity #6.  Select a word and create a word tree as shown by the example (but use a different word, e.g., genetic, humane, esoteric, empathy.  USING YOUR CELL PHONE refer to the online etymology dictionary.  If you do not have a smart phone, let me know so you can use a netbook.

Activity #7 -- complete this activity in your WRITER'S JOURNAL

Activity #10 -- Respond to the second group of questions (1-3)

(LABEL EACH ACTIVITY IN YOUR JOURNAL -- SKIP A LINE OR TWO BETWEEN EACH ACTIVITY)

(I know this is a variety of assignments here, but the directions are clear.)

"A Change of Heart"

Good Morning!
I hope that you had a great weekend!

1.  Independent Reading -- Let's take about 15 minutes for reading.  With this amount of time, I want to reinforce the concept and importance of this activity.  Please begin at the bell.  DO NOT ask me to go to the library to check a book out.  I reminded you of this ALL last week.

2."A Change of Heart"  -- We gave this text a first reading on Friday.  Today you will read the text again, noting what Rifkin is doing paragraph by paragraph (charting the text).

Option 1: Just start writing. Forget about structure and organization because you can figure that out later. Writer's that choose this option should feel ready to write. They should know which essay they want to write and have a good idea what they want to present in their essays.

Option 2: Take some time to sketch out your paper using a planning chart like the in the Personal Statement Prompts file. It may be a good idea to use the mentor text statements or to choose a prompt. Try out different approaches and/or subjects. Draw on what you studied, read, and written over the past few weeks to find a sense of purpose for your essay. Now write.
